Have you ever thought about what you eat or drink? How you drink? How you eat?

Digestion is a chemical process which starts from your mouth and works since your food reach to the stomach and completed in the intestine. Drinking liquid during meal will dilute your natural digestive enzymes and stomach acids, and weaken the ability to breakdown our food, such as proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Stomach acids are diluted when we drink liquids with our food because water is excreted faster than solids. If you are chewing adequately, you will be creating saliva and you should be able to eat comfortably without aid additional liquids. Allow your saliva to naturally help to swallow your food. (Drinking cold beverages with your meal are harmful because they further diminished your digestion). So instead of washing down your food with liquids activate these health principals,

  1. Drink full glass of water 30 minutes before your meal and 1 hour after meal. Water allows adequate saliva for digesting food into mouth and stimulates the mucus cell into stomach. Mucus cells protect the stomach wall from ulcers while acids release to breakdown food, during half an hour before meal.

And one hour after your meal will help you feel full and also prevent overeating, and you have good bowel movements.

  1. Chew your food properly:

Chewing is mechanical digestion. Digestion is extremely important for our long term health and well being. Did you know that 70% of our new functions take place in our gut. Digestion is a complex process, required a symphony of biochemical processes to carry out multiple functions such as

  • Breaking down food
  • Absorbing nutrients
  • Gut-to-brain communication signalling fullness and satisfaction

When food is properly chew in our mouth our senses attach to the food help to breakdown mouth feel and saliva also signals to the brain to chemically prepared for digestion. And your organs communicate with each other to letting your body prepare for digestion. Digestion taking approximately 5-6 hours for full meal to digest and leave the stomach area,

Digestive, System, Human, Digestion, Labelled, Diagram

  • Moistens food and make it palatable to swallow
  • Plays a role in our sensory experience with taste
  • Contains digestive enzymes such as amylase
  • Give protection against harmful bacteria.

Amylase is the primary salivary enzyme that breaks down starch and hydrates mouth and break down into sugar which gives us energy. Excess of sugar is storage as fat.

When you fail to chew well and swallow food harshly whole, involuntarily avoid the salivary digestive aid and also losing the taste of food.

  • Chew your food until mere liquid consistency
  • Take small bites to encourage chewing and discouraging eat large pieces of food.
  • Chew each bite for 20-30 times until it becomes liquid then swallow it.
  • Chew your liquids your water, your smoothies, your soups etc. It activates your salivary gland. Let mouth feel the sensation of taste; avoid drinking from the straw, that will not encourage you to chew your liquids. Try to being slow down your-self during meal time, by this you can control the first step in the digestive process, which is chewing. Our digestion system is regulated by our nervous system. Our sense of stress at meal time inserts a powerful force in our nervous system.
  • When we are calm, normal functions of digestion occur like

Saliva is stimulated

Stomach acids, bile and pancreatic enzymes are al released

Rhythmic contraction in the intestine gently moves the food along.

We eat, we digest, we absorb nutrients, and we eliminate undigested foods and toxins…. so, let’s see what happen to digestion when we stress out

DIGESTION UNDER STRESS:

  • Inhibition of digestive processes
  • Reduction of absorption of nutrients,
  • Putrefaction of undigested foods
  • Formulation of toxins.
  • Indigestion
  • Bloating, heart burn, constipation, gas
  • And ultimately weight gain.

Yes, drinking our food and chewing our water will create miracle in our health. So let’s see the benefit one by one.

  1. Normally it is universally claimed that chewing our food for 32 times before ingestion is good.
  2. It prevents bloating and aids digestion. Food mixes with saliva well and that’s what mindful eating is, and in this we can enjoy the complete taste of the food for longer period.
